Selecting displacement/energy at fracture for damage evolution in machining using Abaqus

Selecting displacement/energy at fracture for damage evolution in machining using Abaqus

Selecting displacement/energy at fracture for damage evolution in machining using Abaqus

(OP)
Hello Abaqus experts,

I am trying to model chip formation in machining using abaqus. To model the damage evolution, I need to define the displacement at fracture or energy at fracture. I searched all over the web (including abaqus documentation, research articles and forums), and found nothing on it for the specific material I am using (Inconel 718). Below is my assumptions:

0. Abaqus/Explicit solver
1. Damage model: Shear damage - fracture strain =2
2. Plastic model: Johnson-Cook model - with strain hardening and temperature softening parameters
2. 2D Plain strain element
3. Rigid tool
4. mesh size 8 micro meter and adaptive meshing with frequency 10 and sweep 1 (default values)
5. contact: surface to surface contact with friction 0.3 (penalty contact) - The workpiece surface is selected as SURFACE NODE (I think this will consider the element erosion problem in 2D, but I am 100% sure yet!)
6. I am considering mass scaling to speed up the iterations

I found some information about displacement at fracture for Steel= 0.1 mm and for Aluminum=0.01mm , but where does this numbers come from?

I was able to complete the simulation with fracture strain of 2 and energy at fracture of 0 ... but I know this is not realistic, since the element will be deleted as soon as strain reaches 2, so no softening will occur.

Do you guys have any idea on how to find this damage evolution parameters?

Let me know if you need any other information
