Wiring on 3 phase 460v motor

Wiring on 3 phase 460v motor

Wiring on 3 phase 460v motor

(OP)
I have a used 5 HP pressure washer 3 phase 460v that my boss bought at an auction that was wired with the 1 and 7, the 2 and 8, and the 3 and 9 motor leads tied together and the 4-5-6 leads used for the incoming power. Is there any reason that I should rewire and any reason why it would be connected this way? Thanks for your help.

RE: Wiring on 3 phase 460v motor

That normally means that the motor is connected for low voltage (230 volts) operation.

For high voltage (460) you connect6-9, 5-8, 4-7, and feed 480 volts to 1, 2, and 3.

What type of motor connection is that? Both the wye and delta motor connections for low voltage have more than one motor lead connected to each of the supply conductors. I would expect to see 4-5-6 tied together and not connected to the supply conductors.

RE: Wiring on 3 phase 460v motor

resqcapt19; Good catch. I missed that. With a standard three phase induction motor that connection will have the windings bucking each other on each phase. I know of no reason why a standard motor would not be used for a pressure washer.
Most of the equipment sold at auction is sold fairly honestly, but some of the lots have an interesting story behind them and may not be in as good a condition as they appear to be.
This may be one of the interesting items.
