ASME II-D strength requirement for inconel 625

ASME II-D strength requirement for inconel 625

ASME II-D strength requirement for inconel 625

(OP)
Dear Engineers,

Note G22 of ASME II-D Table 1B states as follow:
"The minimum tensile strength of reduced tension spécimens in accordance with QW-462.1 of section IX shall not be less than 760 MPa".

This note is applicable in particular to some inconel 625 (UNS 06625) materials listed in Table 1B.

In your opinion, does this requirement apply to the qualification of welding procédures (PQRs) for pressure vessel fabricated according ASME VIII-1?
Or is this only a strength requirement for the base material?

If anyone can help on the forum, I'd be pleased to discuss this subject.

Thank you

Weldpuzzle44

Notes:

-ASME IX is the welding section of code and tensile specimens QW-462.1 are transverse specimens
-ASME II-C and various publications recommand welding filler material of specification SFA 5.14 / classification ERNiCrMo-3.
-ASME II-C SFA 5.14 give typical value for ERNICrMo-3 being 760 Mpa. There is no mandatory minimum strenght vale for the welding consumable.
-The welding suppliers do not accept to guarantee 760 MPa
-Welding process SAW (submerged arc welding) has typical tensile strength less than 760 Mpa according suppliers (I am currently doing few trials)
-I understand/interpret ASME VIII-1 UW-6 and ASME IX QW-153 allow welded joints of strength less that base material strength if the design consider the weakest part in the mechanical calculations.

Yes, the reduced tension specimens in reference to QW-462.1 pertains to tensile testing for qualification of the WPS. This means that when the specimen is pulled to failure, the strength will not be less than 760 MPa, period.
