Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) - for qualifying GMAW-S

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) - for qualifying GMAW-S

Am I interpreting the code correctly in ASME IX 2015 : QW-304 that with GMAW-S you cannot use RT but that tells me that UT is an option for qualification purposes. I am being told that UT in lieu of RT is not permitted.

RE: Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) - for qualifying GMAW-S

UT is permitted as long as the requirements of QW-191.2 are met. Note the 1/2" thick requirement.

Thank you DVWE , is there a code case or any sort of explanation that backs this up ? Or is it to be assumed that since it doesn't say UT shall not be used - you can use it.

RE: Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) - for qualifying GMAW-S

I haven't looked for an interpretation on the subject, but that doesn't mean there isn't one out there...

The code only limits RT, Since there is no limitation on UT and there are provisions to use it, there is no reason to say that it can't be used.

Thanks again
