3-Ply CFS Header

3-Ply CFS Header

3-Ply CFS Header

(OP)
Does anyone have a creative idea on how to tie a 3-ply CFS header together, without leaving one side "open" and yet maintaining the structural integrity of having all three plies act as one?

RE: 3-Ply CFS Header

Cap the plys with tracks

XR250, That's standard practice, but, i'm trying to tie the inner ply to the other two without having to screw in through the top. I'm thinking i don't have much choice.

I just don't consider them "intimately" tied together unless i can either fasten the webs together, as in an "i" shape, or make a box with the tracks screwed into the side of plies at top and bottom. I don't see this as possible with the inner ply.

RE: 3-Ply CFS Header

Dunno what to tell you. What is your application and constraints?

RE: 3-Ply CFS Header

Is this a side loaded member?

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

No. All gravity.

Thank you all!

But, i decided simply to use a 2-ply 12x3x97 instead of 3-ply 12x162x97. I don't know why i didn't think of that earlier... rough and busy day i suppose...

RE: 3-Ply CFS Header

I would never use a 3-ply CFS header, because the middle ply would only bear on the webs of the supporting jamb studs. The outer plies can bear on the flanges of the jamb studs.
