Single Point Urban Interchange

Single Point Urban Interchange

Single Point Urban Interchange

(OP)
I would like to know the difference in traffic flow capacity before and after a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) is installed.   How did this interchange improve the traffic flow?

Thanks  Steve

RE: Single Point Urban Interchange

If one assumes that the SPUI is replacing the traditional "diamond" style of interchange then the difference in capacity would be slight .... however the area required for the SPUI (ie. the "footprint") would be smaller for the SPUI than for the diamond. However this smaller footprint comes at a price. In order to maintain sight distance etc. the SPUI requires longer deeper beams and more beam lines than the "diamond" did. Such beams are not cheap. Thus the SPUI lends itself to those applications where rights-of-way are restricted and you need to "shoe-horn" a new interchange into an existing urbanized area.
