Difference between AISI code and AMS spec?

Difference between AISI code and AMS spec?

Difference between AISI code and AMS spec?

(OP)
Hello,

I am trying to put together purchasing specifications for 6061-T6 .06thk sheet. In the MMPDS-09 it calls out 3 specifications 'AMS 4025' 'AMS4026' and 'AMS4027' under the table with material properties for 6061-T6.

What is the best way to order these materials? By the 6061-T6 designation or one of the AMS designations?

I suppose I have a general confusion on the differences.

Thank

I think I figured it out.

Need to specify AMS spec and temper.

RE: Difference between AISI code and AMS spec?

Check the AMS specs. AMS 4025 is 6061 sheet in -0 condition. AMS 4026 is 6061 sheet in -T4 condition. AMS 4027 is 6061 sheet in -T6 condition.

If you want 6061 sheet in -T6 condition then order AMS 4027.

RE: Difference between AISI code and AMS spec?

The older AISI (and other associations also) only are alloy names that go with specific chemistry ranges.
Even today using an UNS designation is just chemistry.
For properties, tolerances, testing and such you need a product specification such as ASTM, SAE, AMS, AMSE.
I am gald that you got it sorted out.

If you ever put such a spec on documentation it would behoove you to buy a copy of the spec, so that you actually know what is included and what is not covered.

RE: Difference between AISI code and AMS spec?

In aerospace we are very specific.

NOTE.
Aluminum alloys are covered by AMS and ASTM specs [primarily]. The Aluminum Association as fundamental specs for alloy designations and tempers [plus a few other aspects of aluminum, such as tolerances for raw stock].

NOTE.
Allowables in MMPDS-xx are only applicable to the form-alloy-temper-specification listed

NOTE.
AISI [American Institute of Iron and steel] specs will never apply to aluminum/aluminum alloys.

Examples for designation of an aluminum alloy per AMS specs [RE tbuelna's examples, above]... Typical PL listings written-out in NOTE-form...

0.062"-thick aluminum sheet, 6061-T6, AMS4027
0.062"-thick aluminum sheet, 6061-T6 [AMS4027] when wearing my M&P hat, I prefer this simple format
0.062"-thick aluminum sheet, 6061-T6 per AMS2047

0.062"-thick aluminum sheet, 6061-O [AMS4025]. After forming, heat treat to -T62 per AMS2770.
0.375"-thick aluminum plate, 6061-T6 [AMS4047]

IF interested, I can present typical examples of aerospace PL listings for steel/CRES parts.
