Trout fishing
Trout fishing
(OP)
So trout season just opened in PA (the southeast counties), and I caught my first of the year. I've been fly fishing for the last 3-4 years, and have also gotten into tying my own flies. Caught the attached on a #12 wooly bugger in black w/green crystal flash, with a 4wt Orvis Clearwater rod and reel, 4X leader and 5X tippet. There's something satisfying about catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself! He was ~12-14 inches, and I'm looking forward to a good meal sometime soon (but it will have to be when SWMBO is not home, she's not as keen on pan fried trout!). I don't usually do catch and release since the trout are stocked by the fish commission and the stream I caught it in will be too warm for the trout to survive come June.

RE: Trout fishing
Most people see fly fishing as trout fishing. Lots of other great fly-fishing opportunities. Bluegills are a great way to hone skills. My favorite is smallmouth bass. Smallies inhabit rivers that are like trout streams but warmer (like the stream you mention). They hit flies, and they can be quite acrobatic once hooked.
There was a guide in Door County (Wisconsin's "thumb") that was guiding fly fishing trips for giant carp on Green Bay. Lots of his customers came from Britain and Germany. Similar to fishing Florida Keys for bonefish.
Biggest largemouth I ever caught was on a fly.

I also like catching bluegill/sunnies and bass on the fly. I've had good luck with elk hair caddis with a rabbits ear body for bluegill and clouser minnows for bass. I have also heard good things about carp fishing using a fly. I plan on trying for stripers this spring/summer at the shore with an 8wt and 1/0 clousers I tied in anticipation.
