Help!!

I’m not an analyst but like to run simple static checks on my designs using COSMOS/M. I was playing around with “GAP” elements trying to learn, and came up with a problem.
Since Gap elements are only in non-linear I made a simple test case.

Material: steel

Thickness .125

Configuration: 5”h X 7”w X 8”l box resting .25 above a Z section that is 4.5 top flange X 10” vertical flange and 4.5” bottom flange. Bottom flange was held ridged with a load of 500lb placed thru a node on top face of box.

With non-linear solution max stress was 65,304 p.s.i.

Remodeling it so that I could run it without a gap element and just as a static model it produced a max stress of 110,720 p.s.i.

Is this just due to the high loads and the NL solution allows for more bending?

Please advise

jon
