Lateral support of steel beam
Lateral support of steel beam
(OP)
I am supporting two cross beams on top of a w shape underneath
I like to connect the bottom flange of cross beams to top flange of supporting beam below
The owner does not want to bolt and lose flange meat, I heard welding is not advised, what are other options?
Thank you

For some applications gravity would be enough.
Probably not your application, but who can say, based on the info provided.
"...welding is not advised......"
There are a few welded connections shown here -

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Thank you for your comments.
Yes, the two cross beams are holding the roof and the new supporting beam will be replacement of the masonary wall that is going to be removed.
So if we install the new supporting beam and weld the cross beams to the cross beams while the wall is still carrying then the welding should be okay, am I right?
Can u please give me a reference or explain more about welding a new member to a member already under laod? are we not allowed to weld?
Thanks

Yeah, I would think so.
