I have the SJI 85-year catalog at the office, but trying to answer something today.
36' long, 24" OWJ, c-1950's (although 60's possible). Webs are 3/4" rounds with panel points at 24" o.c. Top and Bottom chords are 4" wide (x 1 1/2) bulbed-hat channel type shape (not solid bulb, the 7/32" flat plate is rounded in the middle so it looks like 1 1/4" flat, 1 1/2" semi circle, 1 1/4" flat). I believe this is an SJ or S joist (2 1/2" bearing). I calculate appx. 390 plf capacity, but this is much higher than current K-joist capacities. Anyone have access to the tables that can provide me with the allowable TL/LL for 24" joist? (obviously, there will be a few since we don't know actual chord designation). Thank you.

RE: Historical OWJ

May be a Great West Steel joist.

They are no longer in business, but I have a catalog at work.

I think Sliderule may also hand the catalog on his site.

BAretired has one too.

thank you. I do see that there is a 1973 on Sliderule...but the shape is more of a boxier hat channel (wide rib deck shape)....mine is more circular of a "hat".

RE: Historical OWJ

50's or 60's would seem that these might be a "J" or "H" joist. Your best bet is to obtain a joist tag which will normally indicate size, joist mark, length and manufacturer. Many manufacturers used hat channels chords. Also call SJI for additional help.

RE: Historical OWJ

Where is SRE? Check out SlideRuleEra's website - he has a lot of old manuals and catalogues on his site.

RE: Historical OWJ

Contact the SJI, they have a submittal form online and are extremely good at getting back to you.
