Timoshenko beam-column

Timoshenko beam-column

Timoshenko beam-column

(OP)
Can anyone point me in the direction of a clear and concise explanation of Timoshenko beam-columns and how they differ from other models? I understand the form of the stiffness matrix for a 6DOF FEM line element is different, but I'm not sure what the differences are based on or mean.

Preferably I'd like to look at free sources of information rather than purchasing a text book. The stuff I've found from internet searches hasn't been as clear to me as I would like.

RE: Timoshenko beam-column

Normal frame element FEM stiffness matrices account only for axial and flexural member deformation. Timoshenko beam formulation also accounts for shear deformation / flexibility. It's particularly relevent to the analysis of members with dissimilar laminations. Link

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Thanks for the concise explanation.

Do you happen to know of a good source (again, preferably free) which explains the terms of a Timoshenko beam in the 6DOF FEM stiffness matrix? Your source doesn't have the stiffness matrices and explanation of the terms therein.

Last page for the matrix. First 24 for the formulation.

Thanks a lot - that's exactly what I was looking for.

RE: Timoshenko beam-column

Your most welcome. It's interesting stuff that I haven't touched since college. I'm hoping to move into glass design in the future, however, where some of this theory will be more applicable. We. Shall. See.
