Box Members vs Rectangular Tubes

Question about AISC 9th Ed, Chapter F3 Allowable Stress: Bending of Box Members, Rectangular Tubes and Circular Tubes. What is the difference between a Box Member versus a Rectangular Tube?

Thanks.

Brandon

RE: Box Members vs Rectangular Tubes

In nomenclature? A rectangular tube is a hot-rolled section, while a box member is typically built up from plates and angles.

Thank you for the response. I am referring to nomenclature.

RE: Box Members vs Rectangular Tubes

Agree with Lomarandil - AISC is simply trying to be generic and indicate to the designers that whether it is a rolled tube (i.e. HSS member) or a built-up members formed into a box-like cross section from individual plates, section F3 applies.

If they just said "tubular" members then people would wonder if built up boxes applied.
