ASME VIII-1 Fig. UCS-66 note 3(b)

ASME VIII-1 Fig. UCS-66 note 3(b)

(OP)
Hi everyone:

I have a question regarding ASME VIII-1 Fig. UCS-66 note 3(b), for impact test exemption curves.

Subject note reads "all materials listed in 2(a) and 2(c) for curve B if produced to fine grain practice and normalized, normalized and tempered, or liquid quenched and tempered as permitted in the material especification, and not listed in curve D below".

The bove provides 3 options to change a curve B material to curve C, since I'm not a mettalurgist my question is whether or not the "normalized and tempered" and the "liquid quenched and tempered" options both require also the fine grain practice on a given material for being able to change it from curve B to curve C.

All comments/guidance are welcome.

RE: ASME VIII-1 Fig. UCS-66 note 3(b)

Jano6924,

The material just needs to be 1 of the following 3 conditions:
1. Fine Grain Practice and Normalized
2. Normalized and Tempered
3. Liquid Quenched and Tempered

If you go with either option 2 or 3, the material does not have to be fine grain practice.

Hope that helps!

Just for reference, a lot material is "fine grain practice", "killed", etc., whether that is specified or not or shown or not- sometimes you have to check with the mill on that stuff. But normalizing is usually a distinct extra unless already required by the item specification.
