Slip critical connection with no bearing "safety net"

Slip critical connection with no bearing "safety net"

Slip critical connection with no bearing "safety net"

(OP)
I'm considering using a slip critical connection in a member resisting axial loads with a long slot, such that if the slip critical connection fails, the structure will have deflected enough to be considered failed (ie there is no "safety net" of a bearing connection when the slip critical connection gives out). This is not conventionally how I've done slip critical design, but I can't find anything specifically stating this isn't allowed. On the flip side, I'm not terribly comfortable with the design either and would prefer to go another route (involving field welding ...). Hopefully some of you can show me the light either way, since I'd like to be confident in whatever I make

RE: Slip critical connection with no bearing "safety net"

I think it's allowed in Canada but not in the US. Regardless, I dislike it for the same reasons as you. Is this a flange/chord splice in a flexural member? If the consequences of "failure" were not life and death-ish, I might be willing to allow it with tension control bolts and some serious over design.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: Slip critical connection with no bearing "safety net"

I would field-weld for peace of mind....
