Special electric motors

(OP)
I have a question for the electric motor guys out there. I have ran into a few motors that are proprietary. I understand the reason the motor is proprietary but what I'm trying to figure out is how there can be a motor where the frame does not fit the horsepower. Is there a special mod that does this.

RE: Special electric motors

The phrase "special mod" suggests that one starts with a commodity motor.
That is not necessary in the proprietary motor market; you can have anything that's physically possible, for which you are willing and able to pay.

So, how many trainloads of motors do you wish to buy?

RE: Special electric motors

For a given HP the frame size may vary with the speed.
Comparing the ancient NEMA frame motors with the old "U" frame motors and todays "T" frame motors you will see a 2:1 increase in HP for similar motors with the same frame size.

RE: Special electric motors

Duty cycle plays a huge part in this as well. A general purpose motor must be designed to work in as wide an application spectrum as possible to maximize the PAM (Potential Available Market). For an OEM, the application is known and finite, as well as the expected lifespan, a variable that often plays into marketing and future profit motives when the motors need replacement after the warranty expires.
