Retrofitted Connections for Thick Fireproofed members

Retrofitted Connections for Thick Fireproofed members

I looked through the aisc design guides for a retrofitted connection on thick fireproofed members and found nothing. Is there any resource that shows details of such?

We have to provide a standard shear connection for a beam to an existing fireproofed column. The middle of the beam to the edge of fireproofing is approximately 12 inches. I assume they will have to chip out the concrete on the column in order to weld the shear plate to the existing column. The disconnect is, the length of the shear plate that connects to column and the shear plate of the beam.

I know of no AISC design guide with steel details for fireproofing. It is usually as simple as using normal details and then add fireproofing. Meet minimum steel and fireproofing thicknesses where required. Remove and replace as much fireproofing as you need to properly erect the new steel beam and whatever connection is needed.

I do not understand what you are describing in the last sentence about the shear plate connected to the column and the shear plate of the beam. Are there two shear plates? You mention 12" between the middle of the beam to the edge of the fireproofing.

A sketch would help clear up the confusion.

I've proposed a couple of options below that I hope you'll find helpful:

1) AISC's extended single shear plate connection. You can find some design information here: Link

2) A method of my own invention that I think would be preferable because it would require less concrete removal. The downside is that you may need to check the column for the moment arising from the eccentricity of the shear connection.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Koot answered my Question thanks a lot koot I appreciate the love.

Just did one of these the other day because the contractor's field measuring tape wasn't working properly (not because of fire proofing).
