Minimum Slab Thickness for PEMB Using Hairpins

Minimum Slab Thickness for PEMB Using Hairpins

Minimum Slab Thickness for PEMB Using Hairpins

(OP)
Is there a minimum slab thickness to be considered when using hairpins to resist thrust loads in PEMB's? I don't have Newmans text to reference (if it's in there, please let me know), but I was debating if a 4" slab was too thin for hairpins? Is there a minimum slab thickness to use when using hairpins? 6"? 8"?

It was something I was debating on the commute today, and I'm looking to better understand slab/foundations for PEMB's, so be kind. Thanks in advance.

RE: Minimum Slab Thickness for PEMB Using Hairpins

I have used hairpins centered in the depth of a 4" slab before, and never thought to worry about whether or not that was thick enough, though in truth, most of my slabs were thicker than that for other reasons. It seems that if you can reinforce a 4" slab at its mid-depth, you should be able to rely on a hairpin at that depth also.

RE: Minimum Slab Thickness for PEMB Using Hairpins

I've been specifying hairpins, for thrusts upwards of 30K, in a 4" slab, for the same general contractor client, for twenty years without any known issues. That doesn't necessarily make it right. I've simply never considered the slab thickness.

In cases of excessive thrust, we will use a tie-rod from column to column.
