Interpreting 2004 Division 1 UG-45 Nozzle thickness
Interpreting 2004 Division 1 UG-45 Nozzle thickness
(OP)
Hello fellow engineers,
I am pretty new to the field of pressure vessels and have to use the 2004 version for an older boiler.
I have difficulty interpreting the following bit from the 2004 ASME Div.1
UG-45(b)(1) for vessels under internal pressure
only, the thickness (plus corrosion allowance) required for
pressure (assuming E = 1.0) for the shell or head at the
location where the nozzle neck or other connection attaches
to the vessel but in no case less than the minimum
thickness specified for the material in UG-16(b);
The internal pressure I am working with is 5 atm. The diameter of the boiler is 1.5 meter, the nozzle diameter is 50 mm.
As far as I know I take the diameter of the nozzle but it almost sounds like the nozzle thickness is set to necessary shell thickness at that point.
Some clarification from some more experienced engineers would be greatly appreciated.

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

While the wording of VIII-1 UG-45 may have changed, the intent (and results) have not. Take a look at the current version of UG-45 and see if that helps you to understand. The logic path is far easier to follow in the current version (changed sometime around 2008 or so).
