AISI 410 SS to withstand high contents of Chloride
AISI 410 SS to withstand high contents of Chloride
(OP)
Hi All,
For oil and gas equipment, Stainless steel is chosen (AISI 410).
However, the customer stated the requirements; must be compatible with the following:
(a) Water-based Mud (WBM)
(b) Oil-based Mud (OBM)
(c) Brine (KCl, CaCl2, CaBr2, ZnBrs)
(d) Chlorides > 250 000 ppm
(e) pH>9
(f) 15 - 32% HCl acid
I doubt 410 SS is able to withstand the high level of chlorides %. Any comments what will happen? SCC?
Any material to substitute?
Thanks,
Jeffrey

RE: AISI 410 SS to withstand high contents of Chloride
Pitting and crevice corrosion will be severe in high Cl.
It should handle a, b, c (depending on pH), and e.
It could handle f if the correct inhibitors are used.
Corrosion rates in d are going to be high.

Can I check with you, does low alloy steel suffer SCC as easily as Stainless steel? Perhaps, 4130 vs 410?

It will not suffer chloride stress cracking, but it will crack a bunch of other ways.

very acid = depassivation, localized and generalized corrosion
lots of chlorides = pitting of 410 that has a low PREN number
