High Strength Non Magnetic Material, Resitant to SCC

High Strength Non Magnetic Material, Resitant to SCC

(OP)
Hi all,

this is my first post, so sorry if this has already been asked elsewhere.

I'm looking for a steel which offers higher strength than 316L, better resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking, is non-magnetic and can be sourced in 14" dia x 38" bar form. I'm thinking that to be non magnetic, it needs to be Austenitic, but these all seem to be very low strength or have high susceptibility to SCC. The higher strength ones all seem to be magnetic.

Any help at all would be gratefully received..

RE: High Strength Non Magnetic Material, Resitant to SCC

Try non-steel materials, like MP35N.

Cold forged 625 or C276, if you need total resistance to CSCC.
If some resistance will work look at a 6% Mo superaustenitic, like AL-6XN.

How much strength do you need?
And how much CSCC resistance do you need?
There are some other options.

Hi Edstainless

I need to have better SCC resistance than 316 SS, but to get complete protection is going to be costly I think, so I'd consider differnet materials and see what the end user thinks. I am using electroless nickel plating at the moment to protect the 316SS, but the customer is not too keen on that approach. The same with strength, if I can get up to a YS of 50-55 KSI or better, that would be +20% better than 42 KSI offered by 316SS

RE: High Strength Non Magnetic Material, Resitant to SCC

Look at AL-6X., 316L has a min yield of 25-30ksi, so if you are using actual values I presume that you are only building one of these.
