Brazer performance testing

Brazer performance testing

Brazer performance testing

(OP)
For brazer performance, Section IX QB-302.1 requires testing of the braze coupon in accordance with QB-452. The right hand column of Table QB-452.1 requires 2 "Peel or Section" specimens. Previous practice at a manufacturer's plant has been to always perform section tests. However, Note 1 of the table says "Sectioning tests may be substituted for the peel test when the peel test is impractical to perform (e.g. when the strength of the brazing filler metal is equal to or greater than the strength of the base metals)".

Does this note imply that peel testing is always required except when the strength situation makes it impractical, or is it really just advising not to try peel tests for that situation, and section tests are always acceptable?

I haven't been able to find any interpretations on the issue.

RE: Brazer performance testing

Either peel or section is required, you decide which is feasible to use. Nothing more.

RE: Brazer performance testing

Traditionally people did peal tests because it takes less lab prep, but either is satisfactory.

Heck, I thought the peel test was the harder one to do personally. Getting thin pieces of sheet metal to separate can be a bear. I'd actually prefer the section test, but the note made me wonder if it was acceptable when the peel was "practical". Apparently the consensus is that section tests are acceptable, not overruled by the note. Thanks.
