Shoring Tower Calcs?

Shoring Tower Calcs?

Shoring Tower Calcs?

(OP)
Does anyone has an example calculation for the design of temporary shoring towers to support girders? I want to know what all checks to perform to make sure I am not missing anything.

RE: Shoring Tower Calcs?

It's a vague question. Shoring towers are structures. You need to make sure they're strong enough vertically and laterally that they won't collapse while in use. They also need to be easily removable.

And you'd be surprised how often they need to rely on their lateral capacity,

RE: Shoring Tower Calcs?

I used to do this for Guy Atkinson. First, what are your girders supporting? That will just be the first question. As Jayrod notes, your question is a little vague.

@Buggar they are supporting steel girders on either side of the bent as we are replacing the bent. Do you have an example set of calcs when you did that?

RE: Shoring Tower Calcs?

Is bent an Aussie (or other locale) term for something normal? I've seen it in a few threads lately.

RE: Shoring Tower Calcs?

It's a moment frame. Looks like a "bent" piece of steel or other material, i.e. an inverted "U".

@Archie264 you are right. Normal term for bent would be a pier i.e. a combination of pier cap and column.

RE: Shoring Tower Calcs?

Google Caltrans falsework manual - Lots of information

RE: Shoring Tower Calcs?

Haven't heard of Guy F. Atkinson for a long time. They were my first employer out of college in 1960. Eventually ended up at Mangla Dam. Great company - to bad they are still not around.

RE: Shoring Tower Calcs?

Depends what you mean by "still around". Clark bought them in the late 1990's.

RE: Shoring Tower Calcs?

You can get off the shelf shoring towers. Go to Mabey Bridge's web site or just google shoring towers.

RE: Shoring Tower Calcs?

Although if you do require the tower to handle lateral load, good luck getting any of the manufacturers to give you a capacity for it...
