Highest service temperature of SA 240 316 L

Highest service temperature of SA 240 316 L

Highest service temperature of SA 240 316 L

(OP)
Dear all,

I am trying to use the SA 240 316 L plate for my product due to its good weldability. However, I just checked the ASME BPVC Section II, the maximum service temperature is only 454 degC. My product will be in operation at the temperature of as high as 600 degC at atmospheric pressure. So, does it mean that I cannot use 316 L in this scenario?

Thank you for your time!

RE: Highest service temperature of SA 240 316 L

The maximum service temperature limit in ASME Section II Part D for 316L means that at or above this service temperature, local creep deformation can occur in service. So, if your application can tolerate local creep deformation of 316L it can be used, unlike a bolted flange connection of 316L where local creep deformation can result in leaks above the maximum use temperature.

The key word above is tolerate and this depends on the service stresses at 600 deg C.

RE: Highest service temperature of SA 240 316 L

Does your project fall under the Code requirements of ASME B&PVC ?

Check the allowable stress tables of the piping Codes ASME B31.1/B31.3 ... They cover a higher range.
