Connector element failure criteria

Connector element failure criteria

(OP)
Hello everyone,
I am a little confused about the force components in the CONNECTOR element definition. I hope to ‘tie’ two nodes and define a failure criterion for this connection. The failure criterion is that as long as the shear force between the two nodes exceeds a threshold value, the connection between the two nodes is lost. In CAE, I find that I can only set failure criteria to either U2 or U3. But I cannot define a failure criteria to ‘U2^2+U3^2’. So, does anyone know how to set a failure criterion for a combined force magnitude?
PS: For the word ‘shear force’, I mean the projection of the nodal force vector on the plane that is perpendicular to the connector element. Like a planar joint.

RE: Connector element failure criteria

Hello,

Connector failure is very simple and there is no coupling between components.

I think connector damage with connector potential option do the trick.
See Abaqus documentation:
- 31.2.4 Connector functions for coupled behaviour
- 31.2.7 Connector damage behaviour

RE: Connector element failure criteria

As mentioned above, have a look at these keywords and follow the links from the Keyword Reference Manual into the User Manual.

*CONNECTOR DAMAGE INITIATION
*CONNECTOR DAMAGE EVOLUTION
*CONNECTOR POTENTIAL
*CONNECTOR DERIVED COMPONENT

Thank you akabarten and Mustaine3. The connector damage option really solves the problem.
