316ss vs 410ss for chloride environment

316ss vs 410ss for chloride environment

316ss vs 410ss for chloride environment

which's one is better ?? in the chloride-containing environment
i found that in term of PREN number 316ss is much higher than 410 but we always realize that the Austenitic ss isn't suitable for chloride contaning environment.
So, i want to know whether martensitic ss is immune for a chloride stress corrosion cracking and pitting ??

RE: 316ss vs 410ss for chloride environment

Given limited information as to your concentration, temperature or application, 410 stainless steel is not immune to stress corrosion cracking or pitting in chloride solutions. You can easily search the internet for information.

RE: 316ss vs 410ss for chloride environment

410S is immune to CSCC, but it has very poor pitting resistance.
and 316 isn't much better. Is CSCC even a risk in this application?
How much Cl? What pH?, What temperature?
Give us some info and maybe we can help.

Cl around 5000 pm
temp. ambient (not higher than 50)
pH 7-8
please

RE: 316ss vs 410ss for chloride environment

How clean does this need to stay? for how long?
Is it submerged, flowing, does it ever get cleaned (rinsed) off?
Honestly 316 is not good enough for this, look at 2205 (at least).

RE: 316ss vs 410ss for chloride environment

I would agree. The 316 stainless in a solution annealed condition is limited to 2000 ppm Cl at best. However, I would not consider 410 SS because of two reasons - very poor pitting resistance and depending on strength level from heat treatment, SCC.
