Using JIS materials when designing to ASME VIII Div1&2

Using JIS materials when designing to ASME VIII Div1&2

Using JIS materials when designing to ASME VIII Div1&2

(OP)
Having read through section UG-10 of ASME VIII Div1, I am still unsure.
We have a contract for the far east where the client wants to use a JIS material, or specifically, JIS G3115 SPV315, which is a PV Steel.
We have no problem with this but we need to confirm if ASME allows it. We would be asking for a full set of test certs for all plates, as well as elevated temperature tests.
Any help would be gratefully received.

billeeee, you may use this material IF: it is certified under UG-10 to a material specification permitted by Sec VIII, Div 1.

In other words it would have to be shown to meet all requirements of SA-516, or SA-240, or whatever is appropriate for its composition and product form.

Otherwise you have no basis to establish allowable stresses, etc.

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Thanks SnTMan.
I guess this is where we see materials being 'dual-certified'?
I have come across test certs from India/China where the material is quoted as dual certified as an Indian/Chinese material dual certified with A516 Gr70 for instance.
And this would have to be the case unless the material complied with section UG-15 and was listed in the table UCS-23.?

Thanks in Advance.

Ok, I thought I was sorted with the requirments of ASME VIII Div1, but most of our work will be Design by Analysis, using FEA models to the Rules of Div2.

ASME VIII, Division 2
Part 3.2 states that material used for the construction of pressure parts shall be limited to those that are shown in Annex 3-A.
Annex 3-A contains Table 3-A.1 which lists the allowable materials.
However, Division 2 also states that materials other than those allowed by this Division shall not be used.

This seems to contradict the Divison1 take on using 'other' materials?

RE: Using JIS materials when designing to ASME VIII Div1&2

billeeee, if a material is certified as meeting one of the specifications listed in Subsection C, it of course may be used as such, even if certified as also meeting other specifications.

My reading of UG-15 is that it allows material of a given product form and a given grade, for which no specification exists in Subsection C, to be used under the specification for a product form and grade which does exist in Subsection C. The only example I can think of offhand is the use of bolting under bar specifications.

It appears to me this is a different situation than that addressed by UG-10, where a material is actually and formally certified to an existing Subsection C specification.

Mike

RE: Using JIS materials when designing to ASME VIII Div1&2

Is your vessel being designed to VIII-1 or VIII-2? If Division 1, then you would be performing DBA per U-2(g), and hence would not be obligated to follow the rules in 3.2. For a primer on using Division 2 Design By Analysis rules in Division 1 construction, please see http://becht.com/blog/performing-an-fea-in-section...

RE: Using JIS materials when designing to ASME VIII Div1&2

billeeee, my remarks are limited to Div 1 only, I cannot address any Div 2 subjects.
