Minimum Submergence for slurry

Minimum Submergence for slurry

Minimum Submergence for slurry

(OP)
Hi,
I’m working on a brownfields project using an existing agitated tank to pump hot slurry into a flash vessel operating at 0.5 Bar abs. It is important to avoid air ingress as it impacts the efficiency of the flash vessel.

I have checked the minimum submergence level to avoid vortex formation using the HI standard 9.8 to . This gives the minimum submergence level as S=D*(1 + 2.3*Fr) but this equation is based on water with an SG =1.0 and a nominal viscosity = 1.0cP.

The slurry contains approximately 40 to 46% solids by weight and consist of fine particles ( D50 = 60 micron). The pulp SG = 1.4 and the pulp viscosity is much higher than 1.0 cP.

I have done a check on the internet to see if there are any correlations on the impact of viscosity/density on minimum submergence level with no success. Has anyone come across any literature which has looked at impact of viscosity/density on minimum submergence levels?

Thanks
