VSD Cracking and Smoke presence

VSD Cracking and Smoke presence

(OP)
Hi I got this issue occur during the first power on of the vsd there is a cracking then smoke comes out from the device then breaker trip. What could be the possible reason why this issue occur. It could be earth to phase short or IGBT/Thyristor as well.

RE: VSD Cracking and Smoke presence

Rakm,

There could be lots of reasons but one thing is certain. It's stuffed.

RE: VSD Cracking and Smoke presence

Emission of magic smoke is generally indicative of catastrophic component failure, the cause of which will be very difficult to ascertain in the field, it generally requires analysis in a lab by someone familiar with all of the component specs.

One thing you can do now however is to confirm the presence or absence of any major misapplication or installation error, for example the wrong voltage or a grounded connection. Beyond that, you replace the unit and start over, send the burned unit to the manufacturer for a Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA).

RE: VSD Cracking and Smoke presence

If this VFD has been in storage for a few years, it is possible that the initial cause of failure may have been a deteriorated electrolytic capacitor. This is a known issue with VFDs that have been in storage for several years. Search this forum for more information.
Take a look at the electrolytic capacitors for obvious damage.

RE: VSD Cracking and Smoke presence

Was incoming power attached to the motor output terminals instead of the power input terminals? That would let the smoke out quickly.
