For Engineers working on historic project restoration / conversion, I've put together a page on my website with links to a wide assortment of historical building code info:

Assorted Historical USA Building Codes: 19th & 20th Century

If you need just a general idea of early 20th century requirements, a good reference is Extracts From 31 Cities (1913).

Great stuff. There is a '38 NYC code as well, I have a pdf if you want it (or you can find via a google search).

Kind of neat that you can get some of these printed at a very reasonable cost.
