Opening in Concrete over Metal deck
Opening in Concrete over Metal deck
(OP)
I have an opening (36" x 36") at the edge of the slab (concrete over metal deck). The beam that is spanning between the joists according to me should take the point load from the edge angle only since the deck spans from joist to joist. One of the engineers in the office, says it should take the entire load from wall to wall [load = 20'/2 * (dl+ ll)]. Is that correct?
What is load on the beam at the opening?
What is load on the beam at the opening?

RE: Opening in Concrete over Metal deck
Worse case if there is some two way spanning happening then it would be close to a triangular UDL with a tributary width of half the trimming beam span on the trimming beam (+ point load from the trimming angle).

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
