Feed filters fouling.choking problems

Hi,
I am working as a production engineer in Diesel Hdrotreating Unit. We are facing very frequent choking of Feed Filters, What could be the possible cases? In addition can any one tell me the permanent solution of this problem.

RE: Feed filters fouling.choking problems

Are your "feed filters" in the feed circuit shown in Figure 1 here -

What are the specifications for the filters?

I'd start by cutting open several of the choked (clogged/plugged?) "filters" to determine what they are catching.

Sitting here in my slippers I speculate the filter autopsy could reveal any or all of these items -
Dirt, rust particles from the walls of the equipment upstream from the filters, ice crystals if the temperatures are low, sludge, diatomaceous earth dumped into the tanks by the cleaning crew

My suspicion, based on essentially zero info about the nature of your problem, is a solution would require that you will -
1. Need to add a method of pre-filtering. Possibly right at the beginning as the product is dumped into the tanks.
But, in addition, some pre-filters before the existing filters, in a configuration that monitors filter condition, such as pressure drop, and plumbed so that they can be changed or cleaned without stopping the process.
2. Similarly, re-design how the feed lines enter the vessels containing the product, to allow contamination to "settle out" before the feed line can ingest it. The settling tank will need to be cleaned or emptied from time to time, so it should be designed so cleaning is fun to do.

Thanks for answering
It removes 25 micro meter size particles, 200 M3/hr flow, pressure is 10 kg.cm2, brand Fuji.In addition, some times its service life goes up to 04 days and sometime just 4 hours. Is there any auto backwash system available for Diesel Hydrotreating unit.

Best Regards,

Nasir Hussain

RE: Feed filters fouling.choking problems

Filters are there to protect downstream equipment not efficiently remove particles or other substances.

Very difficult to say much more but without knowing much more about what is causing the filters to clog up and where the material is coming from only very general comments can be made.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Thanks for your reply;
Do you know any auto backwash systems for diesel hydrotreating units, other than the manual cleaning system?

Nasir Hussain

RE: Feed filters fouling.choking problems

A simple Google search showed several promising systems

RE: Feed filters fouling.choking problems

Filter and HX blockage is a common problem with feedstreams with unsaturated components that are derived from FCC and delayed cokers. The olefinic components tend to polymerise in storage tanks in the presence of O2. Check if this is the case in your plant. Talk to your plant chemist also. Adding N2 blanketing on these tanks will help to reduce the concentration of these gummy components.
