NX 9 Part edges not aligned (Tried aligning facet edges)

NX 9 Part edges not aligned (Tried aligning facet edges)

NX 9 Part edges not aligned (Tried aligning facet edges)

(OP)
HI Everyone,

This is my first post and I am new to NX. I am try to extrude a surface on a part and eventually export it to fluent.

I have attached the file and images of the part before and after the extrude.

The issue I have is that the edges are not aligned after I extrude. To be specific, I select no Boolean operation on the extrude.
But when I do unite the extrude with the part, the faces are aligned. But I need the extrude to be a different solid for analysis purposes.

I have tried preferences>visualization>align facet edges/refinement..etc. It is still not working.
It shows two different edges on fluent just like on NX 9. And the distance between the edges is zero on both !!

I use a parasolid of the model for fluent.

Any help/advise is appreciated.

Cheer and thanks!!

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the advise. I can see it works but it is still part of the cone. Can I anyway make it a separate solid/entity? I had the same issue with extrude. With unite boolean I have similar result.

I would like to have the cone as 1st and the extrusion as 2nd solid.

Thanks!!

RE: NX 9 Part edges not aligned (Tried aligning facet edges)

Extrude the "rib" solid so that it interferes with the cone; then use the "trim body" command to trim it back to the outer cone surface.

Hey cowski,

I did try that before. It looks good as long as the rib and the cone are combined. As soon as I trim it, it becomes the same as before with the edges not aligned. This is pretty weird.

I have also tried revolving a thin surface over the original part. It just doesn't align.

Thanks

RE: NX 9 Part edges not aligned (Tried aligning facet edges)

If you trim the rib to the cone surface, they will match perfectly (within modeling tolerance). Perhaps what you are seeing is just a display setting. Each part is faceted (for display purposes) individually; therefore the edge facets may not align, even though the actual part edges do.

Even I think so. When I try to measure it, the distance between the edges is zero. Same thing in FLUENT. But it still considers them as separate edges.

But if that is the case, I dont know why it changes when i make it a part (unite) of the main solid. It looks better with aligned edges. I trying to understand why it chooses to do so visually in either case. why no do it always in the same way irrespective of the boolean operation.

Any suggestions ? I don't know if it just a visual rendering issue or something that I am doing wrong.

RE: NX 9 Part edges not aligned (Tried aligning facet edges)

After zooming in, update the display (right click -> update display) and see if they align. If they do, it is just a display issue.
