HR Bracing Frame in Lght Gauge Steel Structure.

HR Bracing Frame in Lght Gauge Steel Structure.

(OP)
I am designing a Light gauge steel hall (G+1) , Sizes 6m x 12m, and each story height is 3m.

We don’t have enough place for strap bracing for lateral resistance because of lots of windows and no internal walls, therefore hot rolled portal bracing frame is required i think so I have following two questions regarding this.

1- HR Portal bracing frame should start from ground and ends to the top of roof level or we can end at first floor level?

2- Portal bracing is necessary?? Does the first floor cold formed joist resist against lateral drifting of structure, if yes then I should consider this resistance in calculation? However both end of floor joist are pinned supported and joist are supporting 65mm screeding?

RE: HR Bracing Frame in Lght Gauge Steel Structure.

You can put portal frames on the main floor level only if you have some other form of lateral resisting system in the storeys above. Say strap bracing or hot rolled cross bracing.

IF there is no other method of lateral resistance in the floors above then you must make a multi-level portal frame. Deflection of your portal frame will be a beast depending on the number of floors.

Do you have enough wall area to create shear walls with your sheathing?
