Quick question. For detail views, according to ASME Y14.3, the detail circle should be in phantom font. However the example given in Figure 23 isn't clear on whether or not the outer edges of the view itself should be in phantom font. I also can't find any hard references on this in 14.2. Any help in finding a solid ASME reference would be greatly appreciated.

I can not comment about figure 23 of ASME Y14.3 as I don't have a copy, however, you may want to consult some earlier Engineering Drawing textbooks by such authors as TE French about the purpose of phantom details and perhaps that information will shed light on your question.
