Replacing a 5Cr Pass Partition

Replacing a 5Cr Pass Partition

Replacing a 5Cr Pass Partition

(OP)
To start, this is for an ASME Section VIII-1 heat exchanger.

I am having a debate with some of the others in my office and was wondering if people here have any opinion. I am replacing a damaged pass partition on a 5 Cr channel. When we remove the existing pass partition, we will not cut all the way to the ID of the channel but stop short. Then we will weld the replacement pass partition to the remains of the original pass partition. Since we are not welding, cutting, or even touching the pressure retaining section of the channel, do we still have to PWHT the channel per CODE and if not, should we do so anyway for precautionary reasons?

Thoughts?

RE: Replacing a 5Cr Pass Partition

How old is the equipment and what is the service?
How far away from the original weld are you planning?
How thick is the material?

RE: Replacing a 5Cr Pass Partition

It sounds like you are considering a flush patch repair in the remnants of the original partition plate. If so, make sure the corners are rounded before installation of the flush patch partition plate.

With that said, you can try qualifying a temper bead weld procedure for the 5Cr. Depending on the results, you may still need to perform a local PWHT, it depends on the service conditions.

We just received the channel this morning and the cracks go all the way to the ID of the channel. Therefore when we replace the pass partition, we will be welding to the channel ID and will need PWHT. We actually do not know the service as we are not the end user, and now there is no reason to ask.

Thanks,
