Mat Foundation For Tank Farm

Mat Foundation For Tank Farm

Mat Foundation For Tank Farm

(OP)
Currently on the preliminary estimate for the design of a mat foundation of a tank farm. The client specified that the mat foundation be used and no piles. The tanks are tall and skinny, with about 400 kips to each tank. The thoughts that come to my mind that are critical are uplift do to wind forces and the moment from tank weight in the concrete. We usually use piles with a tank farm foundation, are there other factors that should be considered in my analysis?

RE: Mat Foundation For Tank Farm

Since the mat could be a good bit wider than tank diameter, check the mat not only for strength but also for deflection. The typical solution to excessive deflection is to make the mat thicker than it may have been otherwise.

Don't want something like this exaggerated sketch:

RE: Mat Foundation For Tank Farm

Foundation type would usually be based on the soils report- has that been done yet?
Do the mats need to be liquid tight as part of a containment system?
It's not uncommon to use a ringwall with a slab around (but not connected to it).

Yea they are saying to stay below 1000 psf and the deflection in the center is estimated to be 1-(1/2) inches. And yes it needs to be watertight for chemicals.

RE: Mat Foundation For Tank Farm

I suggest being careful with the information from your soils report. Unless the sub-consultant asked a lot of questions about thickness of the mat, reinforcing, and size, weight and spacing of the tanks; the deflection information is likely meaningless.
