How were the roof trusses attached to the main column? It appears like unbalanced snow loads, that were probably not part of the building code at the time of construction, create a moment in the column that sheared the upper connection. Sounds like a bit of unusual framing at that point.

I'm thinking it was one big cantilevered column that failed under wind gusting. It looks like the first column failed at the foundation though.

It is understandable that this is not posted under Engineering failures". It wasn't engineered.
