Questions on Welding Checks/Failure Modes in the Overhead Lifting Lug Article
(OP)
I am going through a course/PDF file available online on overhead lifting lugs, entitled "Design/Evaluation of Overhead Lifting Lugs", by Clement Rajendra, P.E. Several people have commented that this is a good go-by for design of lifting lugs. I was able to follow it quite well up to "Weld between Lug and Base Plate" and "Lug Base Material", i.e. the very last 2 failure modes.
For Weld between Lug and Base Plate:
1. It is stated that f1(W), f2(W) and f3(W) were based on Ref. 3, i.e. Omer Blodgett's "Design of Welded Structures". 1966. Which particular sections in Blodgett's book were specifically referred to? Were the formula's just extracted as is from the book? Can someone please elaborate on what evaluation is being done for f1(W), f2(W) and f3(W)?
For Lug Base Material:
2. Which particular section of Blodgett's book is this referring to?
3. What are the units for fmax? For "Weld between Lug and Base Plate", the units for fmax were #/in. Are the same units being used here?
4. What exactly is the procedure being done at Pw7, i.e. extracting the root of f1(W) - fmax, W? Is there another way to re-write the expression/formula?
Thank you very much in advance.

RE: Questions on Welding Checks/Failure Modes in the Overhead Lifting Lug Article
I do not have a copy of Blogett with me at this time. I believe the equations you are looking for (for the section modulii) are in Section 1 .
