HAZ impact test specimen removal question per Div. 1

HAZ impact test specimen removal question per Div. 1

HAZ impact test specimen removal question per Div. 1

(OP)
I am qualifying a test plate that has a variable double-V groove that has a groove depth of 1 inch on one side and 6 inches on the opposite side. Per Fig. UG-84.5 and Table UG-84.6, two set of HAZ impact specimens shall be removed from a depth of between (1/4)t to (1/2)t from each weld surface. Does this mean that one set shall be taken from (1/4)t to 1/2(t) from the 1 inch groove depth and the same distance from the 6 inch groove depth (i.e. 1/4 to 1/2 inch from 1 inch groove depth and 1.5 inch to 3 inch from 6 inch groove depth) or (1/4)t to (1/2)t from full 7 inches (i.e. 1.75 to 3.5 inch)?

RE: HAZ impact test specimen removal question per Div. 1

From each weld surface using the full "t" thickness as a reference, and not deposited weld thickness, see Note 2 below for your application

(2) For two-sided welds in base metal thicknesses greater
than 3/4 in. (19 mm), specimen sets shall be removed
from a depth of between 1/4t and 1/2t from each weld
surface.

RE: HAZ impact test specimen removal question per Div. 1

The latter is correct:

Quote:

(1/4)t to (1/2)t from full 7 inches (i.e. 1.75 to 3.5 inch)

Taken from both sides.

Use (h)(3) for weld metal

Thanks.
