Hex Nut vs. Heavy Hex Nut

Hex Nut vs. Heavy Hex Nut

Hex Nut vs. Heavy Hex Nut

(OP)
Hello Everyone,

I would like to know if a hex nut develops the capacity of the bolt? I assume the heavy hex nut does, but I'm not sure about the standard hex nut. Could you point me to the reference? Thanks in advance!

RE: Hex Nut vs. Heavy Hex Nut

In a snug hole, a standard machine nut will develop the full strength. In a tensile test to failure, usually the head flies off. Violently.

Heavy Hex pattern is for holes that are not 'snug' like structural steel beams & columns, and pipe flanges. These holes have a generous size, to make it easier to align them and get the bolts [or studs] into them.

RE: Hex Nut vs. Heavy Hex Nut

AISC - Manual of Steel Construction - ASD, LRFD or combined - Just look for the table matching bolt material with required nut.

@ Duwe6 - What do industrials consider "snug" for hole size? For structural, are hole sizes are usually 1/16" more than say a 3/4" Dia. bolt. (BTW - when we structurals refer to snug we are talking about the tightening of the bolt to the full strength of a man and not the size of the hole)

RE: Hex Nut vs. Heavy Hex Nut

Concur that a snug hole is not similar to "Snug-Tight" bolt torque.
