Design of New RC Ledge to Brickwall

Design of New RC Ledge to Brickwall

Dear All,

I have a problem on how to connect the new rc ledge which is roughly 1350mm cantilever from the brickwall. The building is an existing structure. Usually in my design, for any building that have cantilever canopy or ledge, I will make sure it connects to my beam because I am afraid of pulling force that will exert on the brickwall as I do not study design for this.

However, this situation did not allow me to put my rc ledge at my 1st floor beam.

Any suggestion on how to tackle this?

Please find attached the image of the issue. Thank you.

You should consider hanging the air conditioner from the floor above. Cantilevering off a brick wall is not a good idea.

Yeah, a moment connected cantilever will be tough to design from a connection perspective. Another option would be to use a cantilevered bracket assembly (horizontal and diagonal member).

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Hello hokie66 and KootK (:

Thank you for your opinions and suggestions. As of now, I am designing it by using stiffener column (UC) column to support my AC platform. Though I am wondering, if it would be okay if I just do the platform without tying it back to the UC? I mean just let it cantilever from the UC column.

Thanks.

That sounds promising but it would be good to see an updated sketch to ensure that we understand what you have in mind. Is the column inside of the wall or outside of it? Will platform framing pass through the brick to the column or still fasten to the brick?
