Hollow section connection

Hollow section connection

Hollow section connection

(OP)
Hi,

I have a job to check a rather unusual connection.

I have a I beam column terminating on the top of a rectangular hollow section.

the I beam is subject to tension, and is trying to 'rip' the wall of the hollow section out.

Checks which come to mind:

- shear of i beam area on hollow section wall. (sort of reverse punching shear
- check the vertical sides of the hollow section for buckleing.

I imagine there may be design models out on the internet somewhere?

any help appreciated. can provide pics when my scanner is back online.

RE: Hollow section connection

Why not connect the beam to a cap plate on the hollow section?

RE: Hollow section connection

If you must connect to the side of the HSS, see if you can connect only the web via a shear tab plate. That will create a case that you can analyze pretty simply using methods that appear in both the AISC and CIDECT guides for HSS connections. HSS wall plastification factors into this heavily I believe.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
