Half cell tests on vertical concrete surface and on soffits

Half cell tests on vertical concrete surface and on soffits

(OP)

The technician tells me that he gets no reading when he tries to do half cell measurements on reinforced concrete slab soffit or on vertical face of reinforced concrete joist ribs of parking garage floor. We cannot do the half cells on the top surface because there is electrical switchgear on top, and the top surface is not accessible. There is no problem with the half cell measurements on other areas of the garage floor where we do it on the top surface. The area of the switchgear room was part of the parking garage for 40 years until is was partitioned off as an electrical room 20 years ago, so it is chloride contaminated and subject to possible ongoing corrosion.

Question

Is there a special technique or special equipment necessary to carry out half cell measurements on vertical surfaces? On soffits?
