Test required by code (flanges)

Test required by code (flanges)

Test required by code (flanges)

(OP)
Dear all

Am new and i really like the helpful information i found here

Am a junior mechanical engineer and am ordering a flanges and fitting with 2500# rate carbon steel
So am asking what is the test required for it by the code ..
My client says (ultrasonic and DP)

RE: Test required by code (flanges)

The code? What code? Design codes are different. You must state which one you are using.

RE: Test required by code (flanges)

(OP)
Sorry i missed it
ASME B 16.5 flanges
And ASME B 31.3

RE: Test required by code (flanges)

Do you have a copy of it?

RE: Test required by code (flanges)

(OP)
Yes i have a hard copy
But i couldnt find it

RE: Test required by code (flanges)

Are you asking for the required test on the mentioned fitting, or on an assembled spool containing the referenced fittings? If it's a pipe spool/piping system, what are the design conditions? What material (carbon steel is too generic)? Also, according which code is the 2500# fitting designed?

RE: Test required by code (flanges)

What are you testing? the actual item (flange or fitting) or the connection of that item to a pipe?

Assuming it is the actual items I've seen hardness testing and dye penetrant of the flange face when you've machined grooves, but not ultrasonic. However others might have a different view.

You would normally have a company or design consultant specification to quote.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Thanks alot everyone

Am testing the fitting it self not the piping system
The design for the flanges and fitting is ASME 16.5
Am going to procure it from the vendor and the client is requesting ultrasonic and dp which i read the standard and there is only hydrotest
Maybe someone has done it before

thanks for the responses ... i really appriciate the knowledge sharing and am sorry for the lettle details i provided

RE: Test required by code (flanges)

B31.3 will permit you to use any B16.5 flange durably marked as such with no subsequent testing required by you as purchaser. B31.3 (from 2010 on) requires you to have a number of mill test certificates for such components "...in a quantity sufficient to satisfy an examiner"- that means you don't need a MTR for every component, nor is item by item MTR traceability required. B31.3 also does not require that those markings be legible after fabrication of the piping system is complete- polishing, galvanizing, painting or other operations may remove the marks or make them illegible.

If your flange was 4500# instead of 2500#, now the special rules of Category K kick in, and MTRs are an absolute requirement.

The manufacturer must do certain testing and possibly heat treatment depending on the material used to make the flange. For carbon steel, we would normally require only a mill test certificate as evidence that such testing/HT was done. And yes, there is a possibility for fraud on the part of the manufacturer if they were to "utter" a falsified MTR.

In Canada, pressure retaining components used in pressure piping must also have a Canadian Registry number (CRN). Regrettably, separate CRNs are required in each province of Canada. The CRN requirement is, in our experience, widely ignored in many provinces in practice, but not in all.

Your client may require additional testing- they're paying the money, and it's their prerogative. But they cannot claim that such testing is a code requirement.

After attachment to the piping, you need to test the assembly by a hydro or pneumatic test, and you need to do all code-required NDE on the weld seam.

Thanks so much for your reply moltenmetal
Appreciate it ..

RE: Test required by code (flanges)

Now find and read that code. Most of us don't bother to answer simplistic code reading questions. You're just getting somebody else to do your work for you ... for free.

RE: Test required by code (flanges)

LittleInch: I hear your frustration- but this is an issue which comes up again and again, where people imagine the code says different things than it actually does. Even people with copies of the code seldom read it. A lot of people come to us with ASME VIII expectations for traceability on B31.3 piping. We're happy to do it for them, but it costs labour and schedule- and they can't expect it of us as a code requirement.

RE: Test required by code (flanges)

Exactly why I urge them to read it.... at least once in their lifetime, otherwise you'll be doin' their work for them forever.

Sorry guys if i gave you the feeling that you are doing my job or am lazy to do it ..
