Built up welding on high pressure boiler pressure parts

(OP)
Dear experts,
Is any ASME code permitting built up weld repair on high pressure running boiler pressure parts instead replacing with inkind tube piece?
Thanks in advance

RE: Built up welding on high pressure boiler pressure parts

ASME PCC-2 Article 2.2 is all about external weld metal build up, note that your jurisdiction may not find this an acceptable repair strategy.

Even if they do, it's one that really needs to be approached cautiously. Especially for high temperature or pressure services.

RE: Built up welding on high pressure boiler pressure parts

No. The NBIC (NB-23) is your code for this repair activity.

RE: Built up welding on high pressure boiler pressure parts

And the philosophy for NBIC is not actually 'Repair' -- it is 'Rework to Original Condition'. National Board/NBIC will want you to buy a new tire when you get a nail in it; PCC-2 will you to [properly] patch it. That is why API/ASME PCC-2 is [slowly] being forced onto the National Board jurisdictions. So the 'real' answer depends on your Jurisdiction; Are they willing to accept PCC-2, or what are they willing to allow you to use?

And if you are where I suspect you are, hire [or 'grow'] an API-510 Inspector. Valid repairs make sense. PCC-2 will show you how to design and make valid repairs.

RE: Built up welding on high pressure boiler pressure parts

I suspect that Akbar may not be under legal jurisdictions with the US, so consult with your own jurisdiction before you blow up your Casbah or the Souk.

RE: Built up welding on high pressure boiler pressure parts

Aaannnnnd that's why PCC-2 is appropriate. No National Board, no NBIC. No "cut it out and replace the whole thing" rules. akbar can fix the bad areas and not "throw everything away, buy a new one". ASSuming that the repairs [vs replacements] make financial sense

sometimes Repair costs more than replace

RE: Built up welding on high pressure boiler pressure parts

I have had repaired tires with a nail in the thread (NBIC). But if the nail goes in the sidewall you should buy a new tire.
