Has anyone any experience with rectifier powered titanium mesh cathodic protection systems applied to the top surface of reinforced concrete slabs?

I did one 20 years ago and so far as I know it is working satisfactorily although I will try to check into that in the new year. It was designed, installed and monitored by a CP specialist firm.

However, on a recent project where we suggested consideration of a rectifier powered titanium mesh CP system to control corrosion on a 60 year old reinforced concrete waffle slab, the client said that they had installed 2 such systems and they failed within a year of installation.

RE: Cathodic protection to reinforced concrete slab

ajk1....have some experience with rectified CP systems, but not titanium mesh. My experience is more with direct inducement. Have more experience with passive sacrificial anodes. Sorry....

Ron - how have your CP jobs worked out? Did you find that they were properly protecting the rebar? Which systems did you find worked best and worst?

RE: Cathodic protection to reinforced concrete slab

One was for a wastewater effluent disposal line and the other was tank related....both were over 20 years ago and I don't know of any issues, but have not had the ability to follow up. Have heard nothing detrimental on either.

Have done many sacrificial anode packs for steel tanks. Those are limited in time and rarely get replenished as a maintenance consideration.

To Ron: Yes steel tanks, pipes and the like are well established examples of successful cathodic protection over many cases and many decades. CP to protect the rebar in concrete structures is not so well established, and has its own particular set of issues.

Was the tank that you did a steel tank or a reinforced concrete tank?

My question related solely to reinforced concrete structures. Sorry if I was not clear enough on that in my original post.
