Skewed connection weldability?

Skewed connection weldability?

Skewed connection weldability?

(OP)
The attached sketch shows bent plates on both sides of a 45 degree skewed connection between the webs of two beams. Is the acute angle with the given dimensions too tight for a welder to make a C-shaped weld on both sides? I'd like to keep plates on both sides of the connection but can move to a single plate connection if need be.

RE: Skewed connection weldability?

can not tell definitively wheather you have sufficient clearance on the acute angle side without knowing more about the bm fla and it's location....if one pl works. why do you want to use a pl on both sides?......

RE: Skewed connection weldability?

This is weldable with proper sequencing. Hopefully your welder is familiar with T,K and Y connections.

There is a lot of room in there, but I cannot decipher exactly where you intend to weld from that description. Draw the fillets you intend to use on the same sketch..

RE: Skewed connection weldability?

Fillet weld angle requirements are shown in AISC 13th ed. 8-36. See 10-151 for a discussion on fillet welds in a skewed connections. Personally I use Sail's connection with a CJP.

The attached sketch shows the welding area.

SAIL3: Although I have specified plates on both sides to avoid eccentricity, the single plate would be easier to construct. I assume you welding all three sides of your single plate to the skewed beam web?

Sandman21: Thank you, I will check that section out.

RE: Skewed connection weldability?

I suggest using the single bent plate shear connection. Why are you not bolting the bent plate to the supporting beam. That would seem to be easier to erect - and if you needed to you could use multiple columns of bolts to help resist the eccentricity. Also, why not use a skewed single plate shear connection?
