shell plate insert for nozzle removal

(OP)
we have two nozzle penetrations 2" & 4" which are to be removed , 1/4" shell wall , table 9.1 in API 653 dimension "R" requires 6" radius for a shell insert patch ,in another para 9.3.1.7 list the minimum shell plate dimension as 4" , do we need to use a 12" round flush insert plate.

RE: shell plate insert for nozzle removal

12" is your minimum size. 9.3.1.7 is for lap welded patches - yours is a butt welded insert patch plate.

RE: shell plate insert for nozzle removal

(Please don't answer "Because the boss wants them removed ...)
