why does slag get trapped in submerged arc welding?

(OP)
i just read a thread that was posted long ago. and no reply is allowed now. it's title is "Multi-pass submerged-arc welding"
although many people have answered that question, i think they forgot one important thing for slag removal.
submerged arc welding flux are classified into three groups by their basicity index: basic flux, neutral flux, acid flux.
acid flux is doing better than basic flux in welding performance, smooth weld bead, easy slag removal. while basic flux gives a better mechanical properties.
so, please choose a right flux for your metal piece.
